Nov 20, 2013 - To the Finish Line - Sam Houston Race Park
Whenever someone speaks of horse racing, the scene in My Fair Lady pops into mind where everyone dresses up with large hats and frilly dresses. Of course nowadays no one dresses like that anymore although a trip to the race park can be a posh affair. With that said, if you are planning a trip to Houston, Texas, why don’t you plan a trip to the Sam Houston Race Park? It is located in the unincorporated northwest of Houston that hosts Thoroughbred horse racing and American Quarter Horse annually, as well as country, rock and classic rock concerts.
The Sam Houston Race Park was opened to the public in 1994 and is the first Class 1 Horse Racing venue ever in Texas. Since it costs quite a hefty sum to build - an approximately $90 million - when races are not being held, you can find other attractions such as concerts being held at the same venue.
You can find the two live horse race meets annually with Thoroughbred horse racing held from late January to early March, while the American Quarter Horse races running from the beginning of March to the middle of May. While these two races are not being hosted, there is simulcast racing open for the rest of the year.
Other than the 1 mile track and 7-furlong turf course for the horses, you can also find other amenities offered at the Sam Houston Race Park. There are 8 bars and 2 of Houston’s best restaurants here - the Winner’s Circle Restaurant and the Jockey Club. There is also the famous Executive Chef Hugo Gomez on board at the restaurants in the race park to offer guests the best dining experience, be it the park’s catering program for private events, banquets and parties or the general food court areas on the Paddock & Club Levels.
If you prefer a little more privacy for your entire entourage, you can choose from a range of luxury suites offered by Sam Houston Race Park. There is the Grandstand suites, San Jacinto Suite, Celebration Suite, Director's Suite, Sam Houston Suite, and the House Suite. With every booking of a suite, you can enjoy a choice of themed buffet, live racing program and tip sheet for each guest, private bar and in-room butler and a chance to have a group name in the live racing program.
Don’t fret if you end up in front of Sam Houston Race Park at the time where there aren’t any horse racing going on. You can still catch many concerts which are held here throughout the year. Every year there is the ZiegenBock Music Festival held here, which is a smaller version of the Lone Star State Jam held in Austin, Texas.
